It has nothing to do with modernization. Today, becoming an adult means backbreaking work for little pay, large amounts of loans and mortgages which you may never totally pay off over the course of your life, war-crime level expenses of privatized healthcare, exorbitant costs of housing, living, child raising, and a huge ton of stress if you ever decide to go for all of those. Wages stay stagnant despite people are more productive, prices and profits rise but people don't see a dime from those. However you look at it, becoming an 'adult' today is a very bad deal.
