A Trump Military Coup May Be Likely — And That May Be His Best Bet
It’s not as far out as you may think. Recently there have been some extraordinary developments:
First, the newly minted US Secretary of War (formerly Defense) Hegeseth called all top ranking US generals to a meeting. This is an extraordinary situation because merely the logistics of ferrying such a general to a location takes 2–3 days with scheduled flights in addition to other organizational hassles. Then, when these generals go back, the same logistics and organizational overhead must be handled. Therefore it is very rare that all top-ranking generals ever meet in one place.
But Hegeseth abruptly called all of them to such a meeting.
The meeting took place today (30 Sept) and Hegeseth told the generals to prepare for a big war.
Or at least that’s what he did publicly…
Because what is important is what was talked behind the doors. Its definitely not necessary to gather top-ranking generals in one place to just say that, or even to plan a big war. Such plans are already made way before and everybody knows who is tasked with doing what in any possible scenario.
Therefore, something that was not already preplanned, something that could not be handled by remote encrypted conferences, must have been talked about in the meeting.
Now let’s connect some more dots. Here are some recent developments:
After Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Portland is the last city that got troops deployed by Trump. Trump says this is to fight terrorism. This is in contrast to how he justified the earlier deployments. The earlier deployments were justified as anti-crime operations. This time Trump openly says that it’s counter-terrorism’, and he defines the ‘terrorists’ as well.
In fact, he recently issued a presidential directive that defined a whole bunch of things as terrorism:
You will notice that these are a very broad classification.
You will also notice that they mostly overlap with Trump’s domestic opposition.
All of the items on the list coincide with the political views of Democrats & liberals at large, and anti-Capitalism and anti-Americanism could be easily used to target independent left-wingers, be they liberal or conservative.
However the most critical item in the list is ‘support for the overthrow of the US Government’.
This item would easily allow Trump to persecute the earlier Democratic administrations and the Democratic Party leadership. Trump and his base see 6 January as an overthrow of the US government. They also include in this various legal and administrative actions taken against Trump and his administration starting from his first term.
Basically this new directive can allow Trump to persecute all his opposition.
Including top politicians and former presidents.
Major Trump allies have already been saying that investigations into Obama and Biden were imminent. This new directive provides justification for the Trump administration to actually do those, outside the judicial means if necessary.
So up until this moment, the administration:
- Tested the waters with earlier troop deployments
- Saw that there was not much opposition to deploying troops
- Confirmed that the military mostly listens to it
- Issued a new directive that effectively criminalizes the opposition
- Escalated by changing the rhetoric from anti-crime to anti-terrorism
- Deployed troops to major opposition centers like Portland
And now it has all the top generals in one place in a single meeting, while Trump fervently says ‘the US is under siege from an enemy within’, and shows its opposition as the source of the threat.
The groundwork for martial law has all been laid out.
All the administration needs is to secure the support of enough of the top generals. Or at least the key ones.
It doesn’t even need to call it martial law — it can just do what it needs to do and persecute the opposition with the ‘anti terrorism’ justification.
That May Be Trump’s Best Bet
And not only his best bet, but his entire administration, his political allies, top business allies, and a significant chunk of his voter base too.
Because it’s certain that the Democrats will persecute all of them when they get to power again:

The Democrats are keeping their heads low now. They didn’t even raise their voice about Trump basically classifying all of them as terrorists. They are waiting for the midterms, or better, 2028, to get back to power. Then they will persecute the living daylights of Trump and all of his supporters because they are an existential threat to them. It wouldn’t even matter if Trump doesn’t make it to 2028 and beyond due to his rumored health problems — the Democratic elite needs to destroy dangerous opposition that could produce another Trump.
Therefore Trump, his elite supporters, his supporters on the street, and anyone who is involved with him must ‘clean up the swamp’ before the swamp cleans them up.
But that is not possible using the usual channels. Judiciary takes way too long, and they are already being blocked by Democratic-aligned judges.
Administrative methods are also inefficient as they are slow and they get easily blocked; moreover, the results they produce are subpar.
That leaves out a type of martial law and persecution under the anti-terrorism umbrella.
It’s fast, efficient and certain.
They can persecute and lock up the opposition elite with it. They can persecute bureaucrats, officials, judiciary who are hostile to them. They can jail masses of citizens who mobilize against them.
No need to mention that they can postpone the upcoming 2026 midterms or make it happen under circumstances favorable to the Trump administration. And then the 2028 presidential elections.
A fundamental reorganization of US politics. The business elite wouldn’t care — as can be seen from how even the tech billionaires coalesced around Trump, they and the general business elite are pretty fine with the Trump administration. And they are mostly what matters in the US.
The popular dissent generated by the mounting poverty and inequality needs to be suppressed through fascism for the elite to keep its power. And Trump can be their fash — for the Democratic elite seem totally unequipped and unsuitable for the task. It’s very likely that a Trump coup will get enthusiastic backing from the US elite.
So by the looks of it, a Trump coup may be in order. Whether this may be a good thing or a bad thing, and for whom, is a whole other matter…
